How to crack zip file passwords on linux using fcrackzip

Remember the lame file/folder password protection trick we discussed yesterday? As it seems, someone pointed that out pretty well ;). We will get into the better protection schemes sometime later, lets see how to break the mechanism we used previously.

Edit/Create subtitles with gnome-subtitles, a subtitle editor for GNOME

I like keeping a collection of my favorite TV shows and Movies along with the subtitles. For a single playback, I won't mind fixing the subtitle from the player's settings, even though its frustrating most of the times, but while making a collection, you need perfect subtitles. Finding the correct one is not an easy task and neither is editing it. This is where a subtitle-editor comes in handy. Gnome-subtitles is one such tool and by far my favorite.

StarDict, a great Dictionary Program

Most of us will be aware of the default dictionary application that we get with GNOME. It works fine but without Internet its useless. StartDict on the other hand, not even solves this problem but also provides far more features than any Dictionary program I have ever used or heard of. There are 1000+ stardict dictionaries in multiple languages that you can use, making it a really powerful Dictionary program.

AptUrl, Install packages using apt protocol

This is a small howto cum help page to help those linuxers who are having trouble installing packages from the links we mention in our blogs. I guess when you try to open the link you get this error message "firefox doesn't know how to open this address". Basically, it means that firefox doesn't know how to handle the apt:// protocol. In order to make it work, you will have to install apturl.

Run this command in the terminal

[shredder12]$ sudo apt-get install apturl

How to download mms streaming videos in Ubuntu

Yesterday, a friend of mine came to me looking for a way to download a mms stream. Forget about the direct download I wasn't even able to stream it on the available players at the moment. But later after some searching I found out that there is an application for Ubuntu called mimms which can directly download the mms stream for you.

A GStreamer based Video Transcoder - Transmageddon

So, after trying out winff, the graphical frontend for ffmpeg, I kept looking for more such tools and found  the "Transmageddon Transcoder". Perhaps the name was inspired from Armageddon . Anyway, unlike winff which uses FFmpeg at the backend, this tool is based upon GStreamer framework and is only a video transcoder.

Deja-dup, a great Backup utility

We all need to take backups from time to time. A few months ago I wrote an article about doing so using Rsync. This was a command line way and didn't have any provision for data encryption. So, while looking for a tool that would let me encrypt as well as backup data, I found this really cool GUI application deja-dup which does far more than I was looking for.

Use Tucan Manager to download files from various file hosting sites

Don't you just hate when you have to wait and download files from various 1-click hosters. Wouldn't it be great if we had a single place where we could manage all our downloads from various such websites. Tucan Manager seems to be a solution for this problem. It can manage all your downloads for most of the popular 1-click file sharing sites.

Manage your podcasts using gPodder

So, the application I have been using a lot recently is gPodder. In simple words, its a podcast aggregator or a podcast manager or even simpler it may be considered as a rss reader which deals with audio and video feeds rather than textual content. In addition to being simple and easy to use, its very flexible. Keep reading and I am sure many of you will replace your podcast client with gPodder .

Mount Windows partition automatically using PySDM

It's always a headache to mount windows partitions manually everytime you login. I have tried almost all the possible methods to automatically mount them. Starting from manually editing fstab file to running scripts that do it to using ntfs-3g and a lot more. But PySDM is indeed the fastest and the simplest way to manage partitions.
